Piyush Raj
NID
From PCM to Product Design – A Bold Leap
Piyush was a science student in 11th standard, preparing for engineering, when he discovered a new passion—design. While most of his friends focused on JEE, he started researching creative institutes like IIT Jabalpur and NID. With limited time and no clear roadmap, it was a bold decision to switch. But Piyush took it seriously. He joined coaching, followed DPI modules, and used summer vacations to cover studio tests and drawing exercises. Managing physics lectures alongside NID mock tests was not easy, but his hunger to learn kept him going.
The Challenges and Smart Shifts That Worked
Coming from a PCM background, design drawing wasn’t his comfort zone at first. But Piyush had represented his state in national painting contests before, so he built on that. He focused on the drawing language needed for design—perspective drawing, problem solving sketches, and creative thinking. His school was supportive and he managed 97% in Class 10, balancing attendance and studies. He watched YouTube videos, explored design through documentaries, and built his own visual library. He also connected design with physics—sketching tools like resistance boxes and lab instruments to develop product design ideas.
Doodling, Design Thinking and Staying Consistent
Piyush discovered that doodling wasn’t just warm-up—it was his biggest idea booster. He used it for quick visual thinking and empathy-driven sketches. These small daily habits built his creativity over time. He advises future aspirants to take feedback seriously, stay in touch with peers, and treat mock tests as learning—not judgment. Instead of worrying about outcomes, Piyush focused on effort. He saw every wrong answer or poor sketch as a lesson, not a failure. That mindset helped him stay calm, confident, and finally crack NID with a good rank, despite the odds.
